Uganda eased past Burkina Faso with a 2-0 victory in their Group B clash at the 2014 African Nations Championship in Cape Town on Sunday night.

The Cranes were full value for their victory at the Athlone Stadium, creating the better chances and controlling possession against a much younger and less experienced Burkina Faso side.

The latter’s line-up bore little resemblance to the one that made it to the final of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations this time last year, and their performance suggests they will battle in this competition.

Uganda’s goals were both scored by the promising young forward Yunus Sentamu, who bagged one in each half and looked lively throughout.

His first came after a mistake from Burkina Faso Issoufou Dayo, who slipped while trying to clear the ball, which allowed Sentamu a clear run on goal and he rounded the keeper to score.

Denis Iguma should have made it 2-0 to Uganda when he was put through on goal by Hassan Wasswa, but the Burkinabe goalkeeper Mohamed Kabore thwarted him in the one-on-one situation.

Burkina Faso had a chance to level just before the hour-mark, but Aboubacar Traoré fired over the top with the goal gaping.

Sentamu netted his second to extend the Uganda advantage as he profited from a fine right-wing cross from Aboubacar Traoré to turn the ball home.

Burkina Faso gave themselves hope when they pulled a goal back two minutes from time as substitute Cyrille Bayala bundled the ball home, but Uganda held on for what was a deserved victory.
