Chelsea boss excited by early Michael Essien return

Chelsea coach Andre Villas Boas is raving about the return of midfielder Michael Essien to first team action after the Ghanaian midfielder returned to action one month earlier.

Essien, who suffered a pre-season injury in July, played his first Premier League match in 273 days.

The 29-year-old replaced Frank Lampard on 73 minutes in the Blues slender 1-0 win over Sunderland and almost immediately affected the game with a dragged effort two minutes later.

Villas-Boas said in his post-match interview: "I commend our medical staff who got Michael Essien back a month early and to see him on the pitch was amazing."

"To see him back with such quality is great."

Essien's return is a big boost for Chelsea whose campaign has been chequered this term.
