Chelsea fear Essien's season is over - World Cup in danger

English side Chelsea have delivered a severe blow to Ghana fans after revealing that midfield powerhouse might not play for the club until the end of the season.

This comes after several English newspaper predicted on Tuesday morning that the Ghanaian could be in action this weekend in their crucial Premier League clash with Stoke.

This sparked extreme happiness among Black Stars fans that the enforcer will be fully fit ahead of the World Cup which starts in South Africa on 11 June.

But Chelsea have moved to say that the Ghanaian might not play for the club before the season ends, putting in doubt hit fitness for the World Cup.

"Michael Essien will not be in the squad for the weekend's game against Stoke City at Stamford Bridge,'' said a club spokesman.

"The Ghanaian's participation in the remainder of the campaign is now in doubt, with only four games to play including the FA Cup Final on May 15.''

Essien has not played for his club since tearing a hamstring against APOEL in the Champions League back in December 2009, then he picked up a knee injury when representing Ghana at African Nations Cup.

The 27-year-old has had a complicated and difficult rehab and he is now a major doubt for the rest of the campaign.

Chelsea had targeted their Champions League quarter final against Inter Milan for Essien's comeback but after a setback he then underwent four knee operations within two weeks.

The Blues have just three Premier League games left as they strive to clinch the Premier League title, before an FA Cup final date with Portsmouth on May 15.

But it now appears Essien will miss them all.
