Ghana midfielder Michael Essien says AC Milan's new manager Clarence Seedorf persuaded him to leave Chelsea and join the Italian club after a telephone conversation this week.

Seedorf, who took over as the coach of the Serie A giants last week, is keen on building a squad capable of winning title after a sloppy start to the season.

He phoned with the Ghanaian on Wednesday over the possibility of joining the club as the midfielder was struggling for playing time at Chelsea.

Essien arrived in Milan on Friday to seal the deal subject to medical.

The Ghana international says the conversation he had with Seedorf helped him to decide to opt for AC Milan despite several offers from other sides.

"I joined Milan because of Seedorf. I spoke with him two days ago. Seedorf is a great man and I hope that he will also become a great manager," Essien said on arrival in Milan on Friday night.

"I'm happy to be at Milan. They're a great club. l will do my best for them."

Essien hailed the quality of players at AC Milan that includes Mario Balotelli and Kaka, insisting he can help the Rossoneri to win titles again.

"I can't wait to play for Milan," the Ghana international, 31, told reporters after landing in Italy on Friday.

"Kaka and Balotelli are great players."

Essien spent most of the Premier League season on the bench under Jose Mourinho.
