Chievo 1-1 Sassuolo: Stubborn Flying Donkeys hold Neroverdi to draw

Published on: 13 February 2016

Chievo drew 1-1 against Sassuolo in the early evening kick-off on Saturday in Serie A.

Valter Birsa put the hosts in front with penalty just before the half-hour mark but Gianluca Sansone’s terrific effort brought Sassuolo level shortly after the hosts had taken the lead.

The visitors started the brighter side as the Gialloblu struggled to make progress in their opponent’s half.

Chievo got into the game slowly and were awarded a penalty for their efforts in the 28th minute. Luca Rigoni was judged to have been fouled as he was about to pull the trigger from inside the penalty area by Federico Peluso. Birsa calmly dispatched the subsequent shot.

Sassuolo, however were instantly level as Sansone cut in from the left-hand side and scored a fantastic goal, that Albano Bizzarri could do nothing about.

The rest of the first half fizzled out with ex-Neroverdi striker Antonio Floro Flores having to go off injured and be replaced by Paul-Jose M’Poku.

In the second half Chievo coach Rolando Maran was forced into two further forced changes as Nicolas Frey and Birsa came off with Gennaro Sardo and Filippo Costa coming on.

Sassuolo showed more attacking intent in the second half but could not carve any meaningful chances against a stubborn Chievo defence.

Both sides had speculative efforts towards the end of the game but substitute Matteo Politano’s shots were blocked by the Chievo defence.

Both teams remained anchored towards the lower part of the top half of the table with Sassuolo sitting in eighth and Chievo in 10th place.
