Black Stars winger Christian Atsu scored his first ever goal in the Dutch top-flight as he converted from the spot to help Vitesse Arnhem win 3-1 against FC Utrecht on Saturday.

The former FC Porto whizkid stepped up and sent Robbin Ruiter - the Utrecht keeper the wrong way to open the scoring for the Yellow Army in the 31st minute.

The penalty resulted from a persistent probing and pressure from Vitesse which caused a player to handle the ball in the Utrecht box, with Christian Atsu slotting home from the spot for his first goal for the club.

In the second half Utrecht went looking for the equaliser, and Steve de Ridder should have found it on the hour mark after he rounded Piet Velthuizen to only see his weak effort cleared off the line.

Then minutes later Vitesse captain Guram Kashia handled in his box to give Utrecht a penalty, and De Ridder made no mistake from the penalty spot to make it 1-1.

With four minutes to go Vitesse regained the lead with Mike Havenaar diving to meet Kelvin Leerdam’s cross, heading the ball into the net.

In the final minute, Vitesse made the three points safe as Davy Propper hammered a shot from outside the box into the roof of the net via the crossbar.

The win sees Vitesse leapfrog AZ Alkmaar into the top spot temporarily while Utrecht drop to 13th spot.
