Denmark send Christensen home with fatigue

Andreas Christensen has been sent home from the Denmark squad due to fatigue, manager Age Hareide has confirmed.

The 21-year-old did not feature in Denmark's 1-0 friendly win over Panama in Brondby on Thursday, and will now rest rather than playing a part in Tuesday's match against Chile in Aalborg.

Hareide took the decision after Christensen was substituted in extra-time of Chelsea's 2-1 victory over Leicester City in an intense FA Cup quarterfinal tie at King Power Stadium on Sunday, with Antonio Conte confirming that his defender was tired rather than injured.

"Andreas Christensen has been sent home to London," Hareide said. "We do not want to take any risks with him.

"We have called up Peter Ankersen and Lasse Nielsen, so we are adequately covered in defence.

"I cannot say exactly what is wrong with Christensen, but it is a little fatigue."

Christensen has emerged as the bright spot in a disappointing Chelsea season since displacing David Luiz in the starting XI in November, but in January he told ESPN FC that his body was feeling the effects of a first season without the benefit of a winter break.

Errors have crept into the 21-year-old's game in recent weeks, but Conte has repeatedly insisted that he will not be dropped and Hareide does not expect the issue to limit his ability to contribute in the final stretch of the season.

"It's not serious, but it can be," he added when asked about the nature of the problem.

"It is a bit frustrating [for us] because we would have liked to trial him in both central defence and as a defensive midfielder."

Christensen has established himself as a regular starter at right-back for Denmark, and in November he played a significant part in the equalising goal as his country beat Republic of Ireland 5-1 in Dublin to secure qualification for this summer's World Cup.
