Cardiff City's automatic promotion hopes were dented as Derby County revived their playoff hopes with a 3-1 win at Pride Park to leave second-placed Cardiff just a point clear of Fulham with two games left.
The visitors looked comfortable after Callum Paterson gave them a half-time lead, but defensive errors allowed Cameron Jerome to score twice either side of a Matej Vydra strike as Derby moved back into the Championship's top six.
Cardiff were ahead just before the half-hour when Joe Bennett crossed from the left and the ball went over Gary Madine and fell to Paterson, who hit a swerving shot inside Scott Carson's near post.
They had a great chance to increase their lead when Jamie Ward played in Hoilett in the 64th minute and he squared for Madine, who failed to make proper contact on the edge of the six-yard box.
It was a costly miss because Derby were level in the 69th minute when Cardiff failed to deal with a corner and Richard Keogh headed it back in for Jerome to hold off a defender and roll a shot past Etheridge.
An awful mistake by Yanic Wildschut gave Derby the initiative in the 81st minute when he was robbed near by Andre Wisdom, who picked out Vydra to drive in his 21st goal of the season from 12 yards.
Another mistake finished Cardiff off as Sean Morrison allowed Jerome to get past him and steer a shot wide of Etheridge.
Nottingham Forest left Barnsley fighting for Championship survival as they cruised to a 3-0 success at the City Ground.
Lee Tomlin scored a spectacular goal before setting up another for Ben Brereton, and sub Apostolos Vellios netted a late third as Karanka dealt a severe blow to his old friend, Tykes boss Jose Morais.
Forest's win leaves Barnsley two points adrift of safety, behind 21st-placed Bolton, with two games left to play.
