Derek Asamoah, Baffour fail to make final Ghana AFCON squad

Published on: 11 January 2012

Strikers Derek Asamoah and Emmanuel Baffour have been dropped from Ghana's 23-man squad for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.

South Korea-based Asamoah, who claimed he has done enough to merit  a place for the tournament, could not convince the technical team.

He was recalled into the national team last November in a friendly against tournament co-hosts Gabon and he scored a late winner in a 2-1 success for the Black Stars.

Baffour, who is currently the leading scorer in the Ghana League, has been overlooked by coach Goran Stevanovic.

Injured striker Asamoah Gyan has been included in the squad, having made good progress on the hamstring injury he picked up last month.

The Al Ain ace has begun his horse placenta treatment with Serbian housewife Mariajna Kovacevic.

Ghana's final squad:

Goalkeepers: Adam Kwarasey, Daniel Adjei, Ernest Sowah.

Defenders: Samuel Inkoom, John Paintsil, Daniel Opare, Masawudu Alhassan, Lee Addy, John Boye, John Mensah, Jonathan Mensah, Isaac Vorsah

Midfielders: Charles Takyi, Emmanuel Agyemang Badu, Derek Boateng, Anthony Annan, Mohammed Abu, Kwadwo Asamoah, Sulley Muntari, Andre Ayew

Strikers: Prince Tagoe, Asamoah Gyan, Jordan Ayew.

I just dont get it. Why are the technical team failing to realise that prince tagoe has lost form. The only leading scorer in our local league has been left out. A very big difference bt the two yet the obvious one to be left out is rather included. A great disincentive to the local players.

i totally agree with you joel. The curse of treating some of our players badly will bring us home. Gyan is not fit, Jordan is not experienced so we have only tagoe as our main striker. Hmmm God bless Ghana. In the friendly with Gabon, Tagoe played almost 70 min of the game. Asamoah came on for less that 15 mins but got on the score sheet. He justified the course for which he was called. Plavi will go to Serbia with tagoe.

This is a very good selection by Coach Goran. DEFENCE: We all know john Mensah is old and injury-prone, He however cannot be left out because of the experience and unity he may bring to the team. The same is applicable to out-of-form John pantsil. If two players had to leave the team, then The two strikers Baffoe and Derek are the right choice to leave because none of them has played consistently with the Blackstars in recent games. GOAL SCORING: When it comes to goal scoring, Tagoe and Jordan should be given the benefit of the doubt. Even if they flop, The Ghana midfield is already a goalscoring machine with the likes of Andre Ayew, Agyemang Badu, Kwadwo Asamoah and Sulley. Ghana Blackstars for the cup! ThankYou.

Good selection, Goran and the technical team are right on target. Those players sent home should keep working hard to prove the coach and his technical team wrong by going home and scoring a ton of goals for their respective clubs. By being given a chance to try out for the Black Stars they have got the international exposure and the rest is up to them. The key now is to rest Gyan he should not be featured in any of the friendlies until he is completely ready to return. Re-injuring the hamstring will certainly rule him out of the competition. Oh Prince Kevin Boateng where are you. This sqaud we have is all quality and you would have been the final touch. Ghanaians are patient and loving and smart so we will wait till the 2014 world cup trials, if you still insist money comes before the love of soccer we will forget you forever and look for more Ghana talent elsewhere.
