Chelsea legend Marcel Desailly is confident defender John Terry will overcome his early season struggles to be an instrumental player for the Blues in the English Premier League this season.

Desailly, the Ghana-born former France captain, is lending his support to Terry who is enduring a difficult start to the despite being captain of the champions.

Terry was sent off in Chelsea 3-2 win over West Brom on Sunday and this comes off the back of his first half substitution in his team's 3-0 defeat against Manchester City.

Manager Jose Mourinho took Terry off after the first half, with Chelsea losing 1-0. Kurt Zouma was brought on to partner Gary Cahill in central defence.

Despite the early setback, Desailly insists that it would be dangerous to write off the man who was so recently celebrated for playing every minute of Chelsea's title-winning campaign last season.

"John is one of the top defenders in the Premier League," said Desailly, who won the FA Cup and UEFA Super Cup with Chelsea - plus the World Cup and the European Championship with France.

"You saw that last season for Chelsea.

"The decision about the team is that of the manager, so he is the one who knows the reason why John was taken off at City," said Desailly.

"He is the one who has to decide.

"Things like this happen. But I know that John is a strong character. He will fight, I know that.

"And you can see how many matches he played last season. You cannot do that if are not able to play at the top level. He played very, very well."

Desailly added: "And, if you look, John is still at the club. He has not gone. He has not left."s

It was the first time in his 177 Premier League starts in two spells under Mourinho that Terry had found himself hooked by the Portuguese manager.

The 34-year-old former England star has led his club to four league titles and victories in four FA Cup Finals and three League Cup Finals.

There have even been suggestions that Terry is coming to the end of his career at Stamford Bridge as he approaches his 35th birthday in December.
