Don’t expect much from Ghana at 2013 Africa Cup of Nations – Kwabena Yeboah

Ace Sports Journalist Kwabena Yeboah wants Ghanaian fans to lower their expectations on the Black Stars ahead of the 2013 African Cup of Nations.

The West African powerhouse have often been touted as favourites to win the continental showpiece but have flattered to deceive.

The Ghanaians could only manage a fourth-placed finish at the 2012 African Cup of Nations despite being regarded as one of the huge contenders for the title.

The 2010 silver-medalist recorded a 3-0 aggregrate win over Malawi to book their seat in next year’s tournament and already there is another sense of optimism that the country could end their 31-year wait for an African crown.

But the renowed Journalist has warned supporters not to expect too much from the team.

“It is the dream, wishes and aspiration of every Ghanaian that the Black Stars will go out there and win the African Cup of Nations,” Yeboah told Radio XYZ

“But it’s not going to be easy as it has always been the case. Last season before we went out there, Plavi had made the point that for thirty years, Ghana hadn’t won the cup and it was his desire that he will go out there and win the cup.

“Indeed the GFA tasked him to win the trophy. But nothing is easy on the African scene quite frankly.

“If you’re talking as a Ghanaian, of course, you want the team to win. But you and I know that realistically if you consider player for player, definitely it is Cote D’voire who will start the competition as the favourite.

“Don’t forget that it’s only a year that Zambia won the trophy. They are very strong. Yes they struggled against Uganda.

“But the fact that they could go out there in Kampala and against all the odds, and against the vociferous fans out there, they could still maintain and compose themselves to triumph ultimately, tells you that they will be a force to reckon with.

“There will be other top nations out there and I personally do not think that Ghana goes out there as the huge favourite.

“I think we have to lower expectations. If you sort my candid opinion, it’s going to be very tough but in my view Cote D’voire will start as favourite.

The Ghanaians are housed in group B where they will play DR Congo, Mali and Niger in Port Elizabeth.
