Dwarfs apologise for attacks on refs

Dwarfs chairman Nana Aidoo has made a dramatic U-turn by issuing a grovelling apology after his fans physically attacked a referee this week.

Referee Kyeremanteng is recovering in hospital after some Dwarfs fans gave him some severe beating following their match against Aduana Stars in the top-flight league.

The match official disallowed a late goal in their game played at the Robert Mensah stadium in Cape Coast which allowed the visitors to run away with a 1-0 victory on Sunday.

Security officials and some media personnel at the match were also beaten up by the fans.

The decision to disallow the late goal led to the attack on the referee and Aidoo refused to apologise for the conduct of his fans on Monday.

But after being subjected to intense criticism for his comments, Aidoo has changed his mind and offered his apology to the Ghana football fraternity.

"I want to offer my sincere apology to referee Kyeremanteng, his assistants and all those who were attacked after Sunday's game," Aidoo said.

"I also want to apologise to the Ghana FA, our opponents on the day, Ghana football fans and all well-meaning Ghanaians. Our conduct on that day was not good enough.

"In the heat of the moment of Sunday I did not realise the gravity of what happened but after hearing of all the reports of the attacks we have nothing but to apologise and take responbility for what happened.

"I want to assure Ghanaians that we are putting in measures to educate our fans and also ensure that this bad incident does not happen again. We are sincerely sorry."

Dwarfs have been hauled before the disciplinary committee of the Ghana FA for a hearing on the incident.
