Edgardo Bauza named new United Arab Emirates coach

Dubai: Argentinean Edgardo Bauza has been named as the new head coach of the United Arab Emirates.

The 59-year-old was officially unveiled on Thursday, with local media reports stating that he had signed a deal which will last until the conclusion of the 2019 AFC Asian Cup.

Bauza, who was relieved of his duties as head coach of Argentina only last month, assumes the role vacated in March by previous incumbent Mahdi Ali following a 2-0 defeat to Australia in the on-going FIFA World Cup Russia 2018 Asian Qualifiers.

The loss in Sydney has left the UAE currently fourth in Group B, and in danger of missing out on a ticket to the World Cup.

  • Bauza was in charge of Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr for a spell in 2009
  • As coach, he guided both LDU Quito and San Lorenzo to Copa Libertadores glory
  • The UAE's next World Cup qualifier is against Thailand in Bangkok on June 13
