Egypt boosted Ghana's chances of reaching the semi-finals of the Africa Youth Championship in Algeria when beating the hosts 1-0 in Ain Temouchent on Tuesday night.

The Young Pharaohs became the first team to qualify for the semi-finals of the tournament taking place in Algeria, taking Ghana to the second in the group after they defeated Benin 1-0 in the day's other Group A game.

Midfielder Ramy  Rabiaa headed powerful past the goalkeeper on the stroke of half time.

The Pharaohs beat Ghana 2-1 in their first group game on Saturday and with six points, they are assured of finishing in the top two and that also means qualification to the FIFA U-20 World Cup to come later in the year in June and July.

Urged on by a full capacity crowd the hosts tried hard to match their opponents and perhaps were trying too hard as passes often went astray and shots were hurried but you couldn’t fault them for commitment and passion.

Algeria now need to beat Ghana on Friday to entertain any hopes of making the semis.

The win over Benin gives Ghana three points with last group game against hosts Algeria on Friday left as the West Africans chase a place in the semi-finals.

The eight-team finals will see the top four teams qualifying to represent Africa at the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup to run from 21st June to 13 July 2013 in Turkey.
