Empoli coach praises courage of players despite Napoli defeat

Empoli coach Marco Giampaolo was pleased with the courage his side displayed against Serie A leaders Napoli.

The Azzurri were beaten 5-1 at the San Paolo on Sunday afternoon as Leandro Paredes’ first-half free-kick was cancelled out by goals from Gonzalo Higuain, Lorenzo Insigne, Jose Callejon and a Michele Camporese own goal.

“Our players showed great courage during the match,” Giampaolo said in his post-match press conference.

“The five goals hurt and annoy us but we can not say that we came here with a defeatist attitude.

“Napoli have the means and quality to always create goals, we have some quality forwards but we wasted chances.”

The Empoli coach believes that Napoli boast the talent to lift the Scudetto in May, but pointed out that Juventus‘ winning mentality may see them over the line.

“Napoli are a team that tries to impose their game based on their attacking quality,” Giampaolo added.

“Juventus are a more cynical team that knows how to win.

“I think those two are clearly the best in Italy.”
