English giants Arsenal to set up first-ever Africa-based academy in Ghana

English giants Arsenal are set to open their first-ever Africa-based academy in Ghana.

According to widespread reports in Ghana, the sod-cutting for the multi-purpose facility will take place in April this year.

The ground-breaking ceremony is expected to be attended by former Arsenal greats including Nwanko Kanu, Patrick Viera, Thierry Henry, Sol Campbell amongst others.

The English powerhouse wants to invest in African talent with Ghana highly regarded as the bedrock of such drools scattered across the country.

Ghanaian duo Quincy Owusu-Abeyie and Emmanuel Frimpong are some of the stars who emerged from the famous Arsenal academy.

The academy has also honed the talents of several players and provided the platform for many African players such as Marouane Chamakh, Emmanuel Eboue, Emmanuel Adebayor, Alex Song, Gervinho, Kolo Toure, Lauren, Nwanko Kanu among others.

They have also nurtured African talents such as Alex Iwobi of Nigeria, Senegalese Armand Traoré, Alfred Mugabo of Rwanda as well as Congolese youngster Peggy Lokando.
