English Premier League to help revamp Ghana league

The English Premier League (EPL) has agreed to help revive the Ghana top-flight league which is suffering from poor attendances.

EPL chief executive Richard Scudamore will arrive in Ghana by next month to hold initial meetings with the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

The deal to help revamp the local league was brokered by GFA boss Kwesi Nyantakyi when he travelled for last month’s friendly against England at Wembley.

The EPL will devise fresh marketing strategies for the Ghanaian league and clubs, improvement of administration, while high level coaching for players will be considered as well as television and the media.

The EPL helped countries like South Africa, Nigeria and Ethiopia to better market their game which has proved successful.

Nyantakyi says this is part of a raft of measures the Ghana Football Association will adopt to improve the local competition.

“The EPL chief executive Richard Scudamore will come to Ghana by next month for us to hold preliminary talks on improving our league,” Nyantakyi told GHANAsoccernet.com.

“They will help us with the expertise they used to make their league the most popular in the world.

“Scudamore was instrumental in the setting up of the professional leagues in South Africa, Nigeria and Ethiopia so we are looking at a similar deal.

“But that is not the only thing we will do because there are country-specific problems which we must address internally.

“We will set up a meeting with all stakeholders and examine these things to ensure that there is a holistic approach to tackling the problem of our local leagues.”

Ghana’s premier league is now dominated by individually owned clubs which has helped in dwindling attendance numbers.

Bribery in refereeing in Ghana is rife, the invasion of the foreign leagues,  poor salaries of players, violence and the exodus of players have conspired to kill interest in the local game.
