English Premier League side Newcastle United are reported to be monitoring Ghanaian defender Rashid Sumaila ahead of January transfer window, according to reports in the UK.

Sumaila, 24, has been Al Qadsia's best performer in the ongoing Kuwaiti VIVA League, having won three man of the match accolades, the same number of appearances made in the league team of the week.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns defender has been linked with several top clubs following his impressive start to the campaign.

And reports from UK indicate that, the hard-tackling guardsman is being monitored by English Premier League returnees Newcastle United ahead of the impending January transfer window.

The defender was close to joining Scottish giants Rangers FC in the summer transfer window but the move hit a snag at the last embers.

Sumaila could be a great addition to Rafa Benitez's side, who are shipping in goals at will, having lost their last four matches and conceded nine goals in the process.

Sumaila was part of the Ghana squad in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
