German trainer Ernst Middendorp says he is surprised by the current struggles of both Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko in the Ghana Premier League.

The 56-year-old is reported to have been identified as the next substantive coach of the Phobians who are now facing a real fight against relegation.

Both Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko have endured a difficult campaign this term.

While Kotoko are in a relatively better position, Hearts are now just a place above the bottom with just five matches to the end of the season.

Ernst Middendorp who coaches both clubs in the past expressed surprise at seeing the two Ghanaian giants struggle this much in the Ghanaian top flight.

“Knowing the history of both clubs it is surprising for me to see their positions in the league table,” he said.

“I think at this moment they need to show a bit more character so they can return to being the top teams in Ghana.”

Middendorp has been linked to a return to Hearts of Oak as the substantive replacement of Herbert Addo who was fired a few weeks ago.
