Essien clocks 2,000 miles just to catch Drogba's wedding

Published on: 14 June 2011

Ghanian star Michael Essien, travelled nearly 2,000 miles to make an appearance at Didier Drogba's wedding in Monaco on Sunday.

Essien took part in Nigerian star Kanu's testimonial game on Saturday and flew to Monaco so he could honour his commitments to both men.

The Chelsea star Drogba married his long-term partner this weekend in a private ceremony minus the opulence commonly associated with the world of millionaire footballers.

Drogba, 33, tied the knot with Lalla Diakite at the Marie de Monaco in Monaco.

The centre forward sported a simple grey suit for the ceremony, while his wife also kept it relatively simple in a plain white gown.

Meanwhile the bridesmaids wore lilac outfits.

Team-mates Salomon Kalou and Florent Malouda among the groom’s men.

RnB superstar Akon and a host of stars from NBA were also said to be included on the list of guests for the event.

Drogba also flew in singer J Martins from Nigeria.

The footballer is said to be a fan of the singer after hearing his collaboration with Congolese music star Fally Ipupa on the song Jupa Remix.

Drogba and his bride met in 1999 when he was in the early stages of his career in Paris.

They have three children together and maintain a relatively private life apart from Drogba's infrequent visits to West End clubs with his team mates.

And, although the setting and guestlist were both indicative of the football star's wealth, Drogba kept his day as simple as he could.

Nice to hear this, a coin has got two sides, it shouldn't always be soccer stuffs. Players' social lives are very important to us.

I hate to ruin a nice story, but Mr Abramovich was at home in Moscow this past weekend, not in Monaco. He did not attend the wedding. I heard Akon wasn't there either, by the way.

@kevindedeayew: u re a stupid fool. drogba is one of the few stars who does africa proud maybe you are just a loner or a sadistic moaner. cant you be happy for him. by the way to all the others just pray you can be half the man he his as for me im proud of the man and the way he handles his business not like other black stars who get the least money they can get and find themselves white women. Didier is an example for all black footballers to follow. i love the man and guess what? i dont even support chelsea neither am i ivorian.
