Essien committed to Black Stars cause

Published on: 19 November 2012

Ex-Ghana captain Stephen Appiah insists compatriot Michael Essien remains committed to the Black Stars.

Essien has been excused from next year’s African Cup of Nations after he pleaded with authorities to allow him to concentrate on club duties for Real Madrid.

Critics have questioned his sense of patriotism and commitment to the national course but Appiah has moved quickly to water down on the growing animosity for the 29-year-old insisting he will return to play for the West African giants.

“The player has gone through a lot serving his country. In 2008, he suffered a career threatening injury during a World Cup qualifier in Libya, which cost him and his club so much,” Appiah told Accra-based Happy FM

“He bounced back to play for the national team during the 2010 Nations Cup, and again, he got injured which cost him his place in his club.

Can you imagine if Madrid had not approached him and he lost his place completely at Chelsea?

“We should understand him, he did not say he will not play for Ghana again, let’s give him a break and allow him to settle well,” said Appiah.

Essien has promised to avail himself for the 2014 World Cup qualifiers next year.

Appiah we rather need u because for me,you far better than some of the 2 by 5s parading themselves as bs players!!! U still can play but if u don't want to,we then i suggest we called quincy quick because his exclusion from the bs is making me sick!!! Can appiah explain to me why h needs essien who of course is recovering from serious career treatment injuries whiles ignoring such a fabulous, fantastic player like quincy??!!!!! This is the time for us to win this cup once and for all but from the looks of things,i think the fa together with the coaching staff are just paying lip services without any determination to win this cup for us!! How a coach go and monitored a ghanaian player who is yet to decided which country to feature for whiles ignoring those who are available and far more better!!! Please do the right thing for once and give equal opportunity to all the players because posterity ll not judge u kindly if u continue to ignored quincy at the twilight of his career!!! Call the guy now because most people are dying to see him in the national team for once!! Viva the revolutioncioooo!!!!

Capito, we respect you but point of correction, Essien's recent injury didn't happen playing for Ghana. He wanted to focus for Chelsea than he got injuries in training and Chelsea dumped him.Morinho rescued him because he will never forget the reception he recieved during his visit to Ghana.

Does Kay said warrant any insult? Please do not insult just to feel fine. You didn't contribute anything but insulted someone that expressed his opinion? You didn't show any wisdom and maturity here.

Essien is trying to revive his career so that he'll get call ups into the national team.If he were warming the bench at chelsea i don't think he'll enjoy much play in the national team because i remember Coach Kwesi Appiah saying that getting more playtime at the club side is a top priority for selecting players to play in the national colours. He really needs this time out and i hope Ghanaians would understand him.

Good point Appiah cause we all know if Madrid didnt come Essein will prob be riding the bench at chelsea just like lampard is now!! RDM was ready to get rid of all the Old guards with the exception of JT/ivan. Essein made a good decision not to come for the AFCON. He needed to save his career, i believe we all should understand this.

Capito, we admire your commitment to protect BS Black Stars players etc, but my advise to you is, let Michael speak for himself. He is a Ghanaian and has a lot of fans, tell him to grow up and speak to Ghana soccer fans. Thank You.
