Michael Essien was named Chelsea captain for the first time in his Blues career on Tuesday in his first official match of the season for the club.

The Ghanaian midfielder was named in the starting team for their clash against Swindon in the Capital One Cup.

In a fitting recognition of his commitment to Chelsea despite being axed from the first team, Essien was handed the captain's band in his first official match for the Blues since his return from Real Madrid on loan.

The Ghana midfield supremo has not played in any competitive game for the club since returning from loan with Real Madrid.

He was not named even in Chelsea’s Champions League squad even though he was in excellent form for Ghana when they played Zambia in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers this month.

Essien’s plight sparked worries among Ghana and Chelsea fans but it has now been allayed with him playing his first match for the club this season.
