Ghana midfielder Michael Essien remained an unused substitute in Real Madrid’s 5-1 thrashing of Levante on Saturday in the Spanish top-flight.

The Ghana midfielder was given a rest by coach Jose Mourinho after putting in an efficient display at right-back in the midweek Champions League win over Galatasaray.

The on loan Chelsea player’s service was not required as Los Blancos smashed five pass the visiting Levante and the Santiago Bernabeu.

Goals from Gonzalo Higuian, Kaka, Cristiano Roanldo and a brace by Mesut Ozil proved far too strong for Levante who drew first blood in the 31st minute through Michel.

The Spanish champions can now focus on their Champions League return leg encounter on Tuesday away to Galatasaray.
