Essien snubs Ghana 2013 AFCON offer

Published on: 04 November 2012

By Patrick Akoto

Michael Essien has turned down an offer to play at the 2013 African Cup of Nations, reports in the local media have claimed.

Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah was hoping to convince the 29-year-old to join his team for the continental showpiece in South Africa.

But the Real Madrid loanee has informed authorities he will not be available to feature for the team in the Nations Cup as he continues his recovery to rediscover his lost form.

Essien wants to repay the confidence reposed in him by the Spanish giants after they gave him a lifeline following his lack of first team action at Chelsea.

The news will be a massive blow to many Ghanaian soccer fans who have been craving for the former Lyon star to play at the international level once again.

Essien has however declared himself available for the 2014 World cup qualifiers which resumes in March next year.

He scored his debut Los Blancos goal in their 4-0 trouncing of Real Zaragoza on Saturday.

You can say all you want, use insults just as most Ghanaians are accustomed in doing, but the fact still remains that we still have a bad coach who absolutely has no clue of what he is doing. He has only won the easy games but as we all know, the AFCON is not for faint of heart like Akwesi Appiah. He needs Sillas Tetteh in his technical team or he will fail.

=================================================== Those with small brains like yours always use insults. Ghana has a bad coach. I don't see us winning anything. There will be another disappointment at Afcon. Mark my words ===================================================

Michael Essien's decision to sit out AFCON 2013 and focus on Real Madrid is a wise one. Regain top form then join the Black Stars for World Cup qualifying! Wish you all the best with your Club. I hope KPB adopts the same policy. Regain his form with AC Milan then join the Black Stars for World Cup qualifying and play with the best in the World. Kudos to Coach Appiah to win any tournament you have to have the best talented players then forge them into a winning team. Keep going after the best talent and you will bring home the cups.

What on earth is making things difficult for fellow forumnites to fathom on Essien's plea to allow him to get back to form before playing for the B Stars? Remember, our encounter with Zambia in the upcoming WORLD CUP qualifiers is to me more important than the AFCON. Players like Abeyie and Rahim with their experience must be roped in to stabilize the team. Akwasi Appiah has to be wise in the way he uses Jordan and Atsu during the Competition. In my opinion, with good defense, parked midfield and a lone striker, we can go places.

well I do agree with Micheal, he's gone through so much and he needs to cement his form and a place in his new team Madrid. I would have love to see him in the the 2013 nations cup, but if he would be available afterwards.. fine, all the best ESSIEN.

My advice is this: - Snub AFCON 2013 - Play full throttle season 2012/2013 & cement your place in Real Madrid - Get a permanent Real contract - Play full throttle with Real in 2013/2014 - Win Ghana the World Cup

ESSIEN made the right decision. I wasn't happy at first but have realized the wisdom in it. After all he has made himself available for the World Cup qualifiers. That's great. He wants to get himself a good cover at Real Madrid first before making a last chance assault at the World Cup. Let's hope and pray that He and Ghana suceed.

Mojahidn you are a fool. A BIG FOOL. We all know how the Ayew family are so self indulgent. They have the talents, no question about that. But they are so insolent and over burdensome. If I was Akwasi Appiah I would have barnish Andre from the impending tounament to serve as strong warning to his future insolence and to all the other players as well. Akwasi Appiah will succeed in doing what THE NAPOLEONS COULD NOT DO - The Afcon and the WORLD CUP.

This is nonsense, he is not snubbing Ghana. He is stating the obvious, and furthermore, he probably does not believe in Akwesi Appiah's competence as a coach. He sees the idiocy, stupidity and bone headed disgrace perpetrated on Andre Ayew in public by that mumbling coach and he is telling himself, let me stay away and watch if this guy has any abilities to coach before committing himself. I will do exactly what he is doing. I will be shocked if Akwesi Appiah brings home the AFCON. I love my country Ghana but I have no confidence in the Ghana coach.

Well, Akwesi Appiah is proving himself physically and technically incapable of managing the Black Stars, with all these array of young but tried and tested talented patriotic players, Akwesi Appiah is committing a grievous mistake of calling unpatriotic Essien. What do you call Michael Essien to do in this team for? Well, may be This is Akwesi Appiah's style of management, but to me, Michael Essien has over the years demonstrably rejected Black Stars like the way he repeatedly squeezed the very TESTICLES that conceived him, and BITING the hands of a father who fed him.

It is always good to take the decision into your own hands, if one is among selfish and and greedy people!! I don't know why the Ghanaians want Essien to join the team at a moment he has just started having some regular play to REDISCOVER his old form. The guy is not yet there. He is just on his way... Why don't we allow him to be himself first? I am glad he has come out to stop any unnecessary arguments here and there. Coming to play qualifications, will be the best way to start anything form him in the Ghanaian team, and not this "ewudzifo" competition known as AFCON. More often, Ghana has called injured players to play, only for them to worsen the injury. Agyeman Bedu's case is the very latest of all. WE should learn as a country to stop worrying and calling unfit players into our teams and allow them to get back to their own standard b4 calling them back. He should learn from our mistakes... after all, we have a pool of good players to substitute anyone in the team. Well, this is my opinion... I may be wrong, don't need ur insults anyway.

There is no boring fact here i think when we have muntari, derek, annan, badu, rabiu, dede, kwadwo, atsu, abeyie, jordan who can represent b/s effectively in the mildfield and still be bordered by one man moreover it isn't a one man game we are talking about 11 men. What we shld be doing is asking God to grant them injury free and a spirit of determination and passion that's all. #Get well michael essien
