Michael Essien has been training alone at Real Madrid

Michael Essien trained alone on Monday in Real Madrid's penultimate workout before Wednesday's Champions League semi-final first leg tie against Borussia Dortmund.

Essien took to the field at Real Madrid's Football City in a session that included some ball exercises.

The versatile player has been battling a hamstring injury he picked up three weeks ago during their Champions League quarter-final second leg at Galatasaray.

Essien has sat out two Spanish La Liga games and has been trained in the gym.

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho needs a fully fit Essien to play the right-back role with Alvaro Arbeloa suspended.

If the on-loan Chelsea player fails to recover, Sergio Ramos will shift to his former role  and Pepe will partner Raphael Varane in central defence.
