Michael Essien and Jose Mourinho could both leave Real Madrid this summer

The uncertainty surrounding Michael Essien’s future at Real Madrid intensifies with news manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed his departure from the club this summer.

The Ghana international joined up with his former Chelsea boss on a season’s-long loan deal at the beginning of the season.

Essien has managed over 25 games for the Spanish champions but has not been overly convincing in attract a permanent deal beyond his loan spell.

He is thus expected to return to Chelsea this summer when his loan stint expires.

There were however rumours the 30-year-old could be bought by Los Blancos at the insistence of manager Jose Mourinho.

This prospect now looks even more unlikely with Madrid newspaper, AS reporting the Portuguese trainer has confirmed he will be leaving at the end of this season.

Mourinho remains on course to win an elusive 10th Champions League title for Real Madrid who face Borussia Dortmund in the semi finals of the prestigious competition.

And just like he did with Inter Milan, the former Porto boss has decided to quit the Spanish giants after ‘bringing his project to an end’ this summer according to the reports.

Essien could however benefit in the long run if Mourinho indeed returns to Chelsea as has been speculated.

The two formed a dynamic duo during a very successful era in Chelsea’s history.

Essien is more like a ‘puppet’ of Mournho and has always displayed his desire to work under the iconic Portuguese manager.
