Ex Ghana FA boss Sam Brew-Buttler has supported the retention of coach Akwasi Appiah even if he fails to win the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Black Stars will be making their latest attempt to win the elusive African Cup when the tournament kicks off early next year in South Africa.

The closest Ghana has come to winning the coveted trophy since the last feat in 1982 is the fall to Ivory Coast in a marathon penalty shootout in 1992 and then in 2010 when a relatively inexperienced Black Stars lost out to Egypt.

The current team under coach Akwasi Appiah have however been tasked to end the 31-year wait for the title in South Africa.

This has increased pressure on the team to deliver only one result of which failure to achieve might come with dire consequences including the dismissal of coach Appiah.

Ex Ghana international Osei Kofi however believes the former Black Stars captain should still be retained even if he fails to win the next AFCON.

Kofi’s statement has now received full backing from former chairman of the GFA, Brew-Buttler.

"The coach says so (he will win the 2013 AFCON), and if the coach says so we have to hope so and support him," he said.

"But if there is a mishap we shouldn't say he should go.

"We need to support him and ensure collectively he succeeds."

Ghana must however make it out of a tricky group which has Mali, Niger and DR Congo as opponents.

The Black Stars in Group B which will be based in Port Elizabeth open their campaign against the Congolese on January 20.
