Ex-Ghana captain Stephen Appiah backs Black Stars to end AFCON trophy drought

Ex-Ghana international Stephen Appiah wants massive support for the Black Stars to win the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations finals.

Appiah played in two Nations finals in 2000 and 2006 but was unable to end the country's long search for the African title.

The 31-year-old was captain when Ghana failed to progress from the Group stage in Egypt six years ago.

Appiah missed the 2008 finals on home soil due to a career-threatening knee injury.

He wants all hands on deck to help the current set of players to lift the trophy in South Africa.

"They want to win the cup this time and the most important thing is that we have to support them," the former Juventus star said.

"We don't have to be negative because some of the players they are not like Stephen Appiah because I always say the more you put pressure on me, the more you give me the energy to prove you wrong."

Ghana open their campaign at the tournament on 20 January against DR Congo before facing Mali and Niger in Group B.
