Ex-Ghana coach Mariano Barreto has slammed midfielder Sulley Muntari's disciplinary record insisting the for AC Milan superstar is a bad example for young footballers.

The Portuguese manager is not surprised that the Al Ittihad midfielder is serving an indefinite suspension from the Ghana national team after being sacked from the 2014 World Cup in Brazil for physically attacking a management member.

The former Black Stars coach says the former AC Milan and Inter Milan midfielder has a problem respecting set out rules, using his time with Muntari at Black Meteors camp as an example.

Barreto, who steered the Black Meteors for the 2004 Athens, sacked Muntari from his team at the competition in Greece revealing that his bad disciplinary record was the reason for his sacking of the talented but temperamental star.

“That was the last mistake he had made [under me]. It’s not only one mistake because when he makes the first mistake, I call him and advise him and tell him he will leave the camp," Barreto told Starr FM.

“If you remember, he comes, he cries and apologize. I never kill my players in the media.

“I like Sulley as a player but he did not improve in Brazil and I will leave it to people to evaluate.

“As a player, Sulley is a fantastic player but sometimes he has problems with respecting the rules. I cannot accept a professional player who cannot be an example for the younger ones.”

Ghana coach Avram Grant has ruled out calling Muntari from suspension to join the Black Stars insisting he is happy with discipline in the Black Stars.
