Laryea Kingston has asked the Black Stars to guard against complacency

Ex-Ghana midfielder Laryea Kingston has warned the Black Stars that underrating their opponents at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations could spell disaster for the team.

The former Hearts playmaker says the shocks in the qualifiers for the tournament shows that the four-time champions must be wary of their opponents.

African giants Egypt and title holders Nigeria all failed to qualify for the competition thanks to the strong sides they faced in the qualifiers.

However Ghana managed to top their difficult qualifying group to reach the competition which will start on 17 January.

Kingston says the Black Stars players must take guard against complacency that bedevilled the Super Eagles who failed to qualify for the competition.

“Nigeria did not qualify and that is something I was shocked to hear. They couldn’t get past South Africa and Congo, and yet they are the defending champions," Kingston said.

“This should serve as a lesson to all the teams going to Equatorial Guinea especially Ghana, because right now, no team can be underrated on the field of play.

“So far as they qualified they have what it takes to win it so we need to treat every match as if it was a final and go hard at it because I believe we can win the 2015 AFCON.”

Ghana will know their opponents early next month when the draw is held in Equatorial Guinea.
