Ex-Ghana star Laryea Kingston reveals lack of competition in Black Stars breeding 'prima-donnas' who are killing the team

Ex-Ghana midfielder Laryea Kingston believes the lack of competition in the Black Stars has led to the growing ' prima-donnas' in the team leading to its downward spiral in recent months.

The Black Stars have flattered to deceive with listless performances in recent months.

The four-time African champions could only managed a 0-0 draw against Uganda in a 218 World Cup qualifier and followed it up with a 1-1 stalemate against South Africa in an international friendly two weeks ago.

And former Heart of Midlothian midfielder, who earned 41 caps for Ghana, believes the lack of competition in the team is killing the country's pride.

“For me, I think I have to be very honest. The showboating is just too much among some of the players in the Black Stars. They have to focus on the game and that is important but it looks like some of them are overconfident and it has gone into their heads and they think there is no one on the bench that can replace them. As a player, if you don’t have some of these things, it affects you,” Kingston told Class Sports.

He added: “When you look at it, it appears the coach lacks confidence on the bench. Sometimes you see players not having a good day on the pitch but you will see them still playing. From what I have seen with Avram Grant, the starting 11 starts every game."

The Black Stars travel to Alexandria next month where they battle Egypt in an explosive World Cup qualifier at the 86,000 seater Borg El Arab stadium.
