Former Newcastle United striker Joe Allon has warned the side to be wary of Ghana winger Andre Ayew ahead of their meeting against Swansea on Saturday.

The 25-year-old enjoyed a blistering debut for the Swans as he scored in their 2-2 at Chelsea.

Garry Monk will be optimistic about the chances of extending Swansea's impressive record against this weekend's opponents if his team can perform with the same levels of intensity and quality which were on show at Stamford Bridge last Saturday.

Monk faces selection calls once again, and it will be interesting to see whether he tinkers Swansea's approach for Newcastle given that he has talked so much in pre-season about picking horses for courses.

But former striker Joe Allon is wary of the threat posed by the Ghana international.

“Swansea had a brilliant result against Chelsea – they’re not to be under-estimated in any shape or form,” he said.

“The two lads up front against Chelsea (Bafetimbi Gomis and Andre Ayew) were very impressive.

“If there’s one weakness at Newcastle, it’s at the back.

“Newcastle need a leader.”

There must be a temptation to stick with the set-up which served Swansea so well at Chelsea, where Monk deemed that attack was the best form of defence.
