EXCLUSIVE TMW / LA LIGA / BARCELONA: The truth about Neymar\'s contract situation

Published on: 27 February 2016

1. Have Barcelona and Neymar agreed terms on a contract extension?

No. Contrary to the widespread media reports claiming it is done and dusted, there is no firm deal in place. The parties began talks a while ago and the club has submitted a letter of intent outlining a proposed pay packet. As previously revealed by MARCA, the idea is for the star to earn 15 million euros after tax, which is in line with his aspirations and is a substantial hike from his current wages of 10.5m before tax.

2. Is this sum set in stone?

Again, no. It is only a letter of intent, but things could change at any time up until something definitive has been signed. Any change is likelier to come from the player's side: the club fears that if they win another treble, Neymar's dad could come back and ask for more money.

3. Why hasn't anything been sealed when talks have been going on for so long?

Because it's not in anyone's best interests. Barcelona have issues with their budget and debt, so would rather wait until the new financial year before committing to further outlay, while the delay suits Neymar down to the ground as his stock continues to soar hand-in-hand with his performances.

4. Is there a risk of Neymar ending up elsewhere?

If there is one, it is minimal. Player and club are on the same page. They both want to get a new contract thrashed out and the groundwork has been laid. Neymar believes it wouldn't make sense to leave Barcelona right now, with them in a position to challenge on all fronts year in, year out. What's more, his rapport with Leo Messi and Luis Suárez is there for all to see and is another factor. The club, meanwhile, is willing to pay him what he is worth in today's market.
