EXPOSED: Ghana coach reveals constant verbal abuse from Boateng in the full glare of other players

Published on: 28 June 2014
Kwesi Appiah says he is unlikely to call Boateng to Ghana's camp because of indiscipline

Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah has revealed that he suffered constant verbal abuse from Kevin-Prince Boateng in the full glare of the other Black Stars players before a final mouthy tirade resulted in the manager decision to sack the Schalke midfielder from the World Cup camp.

The former Ghana captain insists that he is unlikely to work with the Schalke player in future if his attitude and discipline does not improve as this attitude could negatively affect the younger players in the squad.

Appiah says the Germany-born player cannot deny his verbal attacks on him as they all unfolded on several occasions during the Black Stars training camp in Maceio.

In his first account of how their relationship turned sour, Appiah revealed that since dropping Boateng to the bench in their Black Stars opening match at the World Cup against the United States, he has not known peace from the Germany-born player.

Ghana sacked the player from the World Cup on Thursday morning with the federation's statement revealing that Boateng was sacked for his unrepentant 'vulgar insults' directed at the coach.

Appiah disputed Boateng's claims he used ‘f**k off’ against the Schalke player insisting that all the verbal abuse he suffered were seen by all the players in the camp as well as staff.

“I am surprised that he said that I used those words on him. Thing is as my player how would I just say an F word to him? Whatever he has done throughout our stay in camp all the players are aware,” Appiah said.

“Whatever he did everyone is aware. When you deal with players you ignore them sometimes because you need them to perform.

"But when it gets beyond the line you have to stamp your authority and let him know you are in control and that he cannot do things the way he wants, disrespect you and look down on you as if you are nothing.”

Appiah admits that working with Boateng in the future will be difficult if the player doesn't mends his ways fearing that encouraging such players could damage team spirit.

“Sometimes it comes to whether the player shows remorse and let you know they are really sorry. In that aspect it's fine," said Appiah, who is the first indigenous coach to lead Ghana to the World Cup.

"But if the person has been doing it, doesn’t care and looks down upon you then it will be really difficult to say I will work with him again because once he comes back he could do something terribly worse.

"As I keep saying it is about teamwork. One person should not  hold the whole nation to ransom or should not destroy the youngsters because once they also pick that attitude whoever is handling the team will find players who will give him the same problems.”

Boateng publicly questioned Appiah's decision to start him from the bench in the match against the USA but flopped when he was started in the game against Germany which resulted in his substitution.

What do you make of these revelations? Do you believe Appiah or Baoteng? Should a player question a coach's decision to start him from the bench? Make your views known in the box below

Coach AA I am one of those you who supported you from day one. However you have failed as manager. Am sure the players themselves do not have anymore confidence in you and they will never trust you as their manager cum coach. You have done your best so please honorably resign from you post before we force you out.

kwasi appiah is the architect of his own failure..he should have called the bluffs of players like kpb when they came begging to be invited just bcos of the world cup..from what happened at the world cup its quite clear that kpb doesnt have the love of ghana at heart...if he did why did he quit the team for long only to come back just when he knew ghana was sure of going to the world cup..i am sure the squad kwesi took to the nations cup with dedication would have done better...nigeria's team to the world cup has 80 percent of the nations cup squad same with algeria and with same coach

Nyantakyi is corrupt he should step down honourably. he is exposed now, he goes about carrying himself like a mini god and you dare criticize him and he and his sycophants will end your career in football administration. shame Nyantakyi you are exposed. We want change!!!. your inconsistency is exposed i remember when he appointed milo he claimed he appoints coach based on achievement but what happened this time that made him appoint AA. His parochial selfish end takes precedent over any other interest i doubt whether he really cares about GH feeling !!!.

Let's not let our frustration with Appiah cloud our judgment . You really think a soft spoken, church going, family man, with traditional Ghanaian values actually told Boateng to f-off? Come on man!!! Everyone who knows Appiah knows he's a gentleman . Is a necessarily good coach? Probably not. But all the people that know him call him a gentleman. Boateng is known for being a diva and a so-called bad boy. He's lying!!! Even in the interview he used the f - word for real. I don't feel bad for him. He's an opportunist who never loved Ghana. And Ghana doesnt need him. But I feel for Muntari. He slapped that guy out of a passion for Ghana and it's sad he couldn't control his frustration.

This coach is pathetic. He clearly lost the dressing room. If he had communicated his intentions clearly to the players much of this could have been avoided. As a coach you need to bring your players on board with the direction you are going. As it turns out the coach is a bad tactician and man manager.

Yes! Kwesi Appiah should not hold the country to ransome! I don't think Boateng will answer Ghana's call anymore. It's boldly written in the wall that the players don't respect you. And the reason is simple! You're not up to par. Appiah I think you should resign instead of going about running your mouth and exposing yourself. You were wrong to bench KPB in the game against U S A. Even a primary one child in Ghana knows that. You're saying it here and proving your ignorance. Please just step aside. So you chose hours before the biggest game in your coaching career to dispell them. The players who will to defend you are your favourites Dauda (Mr. unpredictability), Inkoom, Boye and Adomah. How do you justify taking Inkoom over Schulp. The game was against the Dutch, superior opponent and Schulp did very well albeit he slipped when the goal was scored. To you it is all about appearance money that you get your kick backs out of else Inkoom would never have been on the team. You have consistently played a weaker team especially in defence whenever Kwarassey is in the post with the hope that he concedes goals in order to justify Dauda over him. This plot back fired against the Dutch as Kwarassey put up an inspirational performance. As a result, you were forced to start Kwarassey against USA. Non of the two goals that Ghana conceded were his fault and yet still he was dropped. Your selection is not based on merit but favoritism, kick backs and African superstition. Kojo Asamoah creativity was wasted because you decided to play him in left back. The left back belongs to Schulp and if you claimed you were building the team for the future, you would not have left him out. Nyantakyi will have to explain his indefensible actions on the video footage about match fixing. VIDEO DOES NOT LIE. The least I say about him, the better it is. No wonder he gave you an extension before the world cup. I cannot continue to invest my emotions on a team that is over shadowed with match fixing and favoritism lies and corruption. Only in Africa will out continue to hold onto your job. Ghana deserves better

What did you expect the coach to say? Literally spell out what Kevin said to him? This is not a court of adjudication; when it is right (place and time) he will divulge all of it. But for now, we should just take him for his word. I, for one, do not believe he would make up stories against Kevin. At the proper time, Appiah can tell all that Kevin said. So lay off the coach. Kevin's behavior has rather been condescending. Could he pull this type of crap at him club and get away with it. We need to support Appiah to shore up his authority of the team, otherwise, we might as well close shop and go home.

Kwasi is a gentleman;s gentleman. He is so disciplined that I at times thought he was not cut for football. Kwasi when he was Kotoko's captain will not let any player confront a referee. Very respectful to a fault. Off and on the field of play Kwasi Appiah Is very humble.I have since his appointment as the Black stars coach met him on a few occasions and Kwasi Appiah is still the same. Even as the national coach he talks with his hands at his back.So with the picture I have known Kwasi, will he at the utmost provocation use such Foul words on his players? Please lets not look at the mirror the other way round, even after our first match with the USA I read comments from Kervin on the International media about tacts. he should honorably resign as coach of the national team including management of the black stars. our problem started when AA was appointed coach of the national team. During the afcon in south Africa, Burkina Faso showed the world that our coach was tactically bankrupt, we kept faith that things would change, but it never did. AA lost it when he called up 26 players instead of 30, Akaminko injury was not expected, so Jeffery was sacrificed because he needed a left full back, but he could not drop Sumaila, because at that point, Jeffrey was the only option with the believe that, Essien would gladly play at defense which never happened. KPB and S A Muntari, i don't think it was all about money, even though we have different opinions, i think was more to do with our arsenals against USA than the money. we all know a very good and serious coach would use his best players to win or lead a game before you bring in young players to come and joke around (lelekule). when he was done after killing us, he came and gave the most ridiculous answer you could ever imagine ****. communication from the fa is also a problem, they seem to think that, whoever criticized them don't like them or is against them and this is how far we have become. Mr. Sanni, behave like the way you use to at BBC and not like a mafia at the fa. Ghanaian sports journalists should start talking about the development of Ghana sports rather than their selfish interest. i think the coach and the management team needs to resign or or be forced to resign as Ghana football needs to move forward but not with this crop of crooks in charge.

We will not permit a tyranny of the ignorant, Mr. AA! You messed up your selection, messed up the preparation, lacked consistency, lacked emotion and zeal, lacked communication skills, lacked courage/knowledge to change your tactics even when it was evident that change was necessary, has been subjected to insult and ridicule by some senior players in front of the younger ones! Your Serbian masters set up a 4-5-1 system that worked well for important matches. You messed with the system without knowledge and confused the players with silence! Kwadwo Asamoah literally begged you to push him upfield a little. You could easily have done this by introducing a third centre back and pushing the winged backs forward in a 3-5-2 that becomes a 5-3-2 in defensive posture! For you 4-4-2 is the best and you sacrifice some of your best players because as you said after the match against the US, ‘we wanted to start with a 4-4-2 system! Every coach plays a system best suited to his best talents, he does not force the players to fit into a system in which they lose their shine! Mr. AA, you have everything working against you! Apply for the King Faisal coaching job-Grunsah will defend you against the Zongo players!

Good people of Ghana. KPB has, is and will always be a destabilizing personality, where ever he goes. I am rather amused over that fact that he is being repeatedly identified as "German born" in this article. I mean, is he not Ghanaian? The fact of the matter is that he was not taken into the Germany senior set-up because he had too many anti-team attributes, and when he just wanted a World Cup wagon to jump on for his own personal glory, the Ghana F.A. was naïve enough to take him in without proper screening and assessment. Ghana now has buyer's remorse!

We need a general who will pull every ounce of fury from his warriors on the pitch during battle. this is football not pingpong. Asamoah Gyan is not a leader, but guess who picked him as captain. can you imaging John Terry or Gerrad or any great Captain organizing dancing and songs, c'mon?. The man is trying to save his job and you don't he can make things up? the man is incompetent, and incompetent people will do anything to hold on to their position even if it means killing someone. The man can't handle the truth, he lacks tactical know how and KP having played under competent coaches was pointing out to him his mistake and he couldn't handle that. One thing you need to understand is that, KP is a white man and acts like one. White people do not pretend, they are straightforward. They will tell it to your face. So i think the coach needs to be sacked or if they are going to keep him he needs to come and learn how to deal with white people, because most of the up and coming boys that would be playing for Ghana are born outside Ghana and they are raised different from the boys born and raised in Ghana. Also i think if we continue to treat people like this no one will come and play for our beloved country.

This is exactly what is going to happen when the GFA was pampering him (KPB) like a king. After we (GHANA) resurrected his career during the 2010 world cup, he seem to have no desire or love to play for this nation again which should have giving us a hint that this guy only want ti play for his personal interest. But some moribund officials at the GFA who regard our local players as incompetent, kept pursuing this guy as if he's the MESSIAH.The GFA must open its eyes the next time around so that we could identify those uncommited players and do away with them immediately.

I am not saying he is not a player but he does not have the needed experience to be at the world cup and be starting games for Ghana. How can Jordan Ayew come on before Wakasu, Adom came on and Wakasu was on the beach, can you imagine? I said this after the 2010 African Cup of nations, that he has poor tactics, incompetent and is not worth coaching the national team. On the other hand, Waris we all know he was injured but was force to the world cup whiles we had other players who could have played? I am even sure Asamoah Gyan and John Boye made the selection against the Germans. The two coaches as well as the FA president must resign they are full of corruption. Look at The sports minister my Name, Elvis has done to the nation, I know its a master plan if now president Mahama AKA dumso should have fired him koraa and not taken him to another field. I just cant believe Ghanaians are buying into this nonsense from the coach in the 21st century. GFA officials always blame player indiscipline for their incompetence. It took the whole world to make selection for Appiah after failed US game. Even Mario Baloteli has a team and a coach. Mention a Ghanaian player who can be compared to him. The problem is that we have liars, crookes, cheats and corrupt and selfish people in charge of the team. Sulley Muntari has been around for long and he knows them. Gyan, Stephen Appiah and Essien could not do anything because deep inside they knew Sulley was right. How do you have 45 people taking care of 23? Appiah is not a leader. I now understand why Abedi Pele was given the captain. From Nyantekyi down to the coach everybody need to go. Bring Herbet Mensah as GFA president give him 4years mandate to win cup of nations and go to the worldcup. I know he will fire this clueless coach who thinks USA team will get tired.

Akwasi Appiah, I have read most of the comments by the citizens of this soccer crazy nation. We all know that coaches are hired to be fired. After reviewing your performance, it is obvious that these citizens have lost hope and faith in you. Please don't humiliate yourself, step aside for someone else to step in asodwe mu ala...

No matter whatever happened they put their greed for money over national pride and how the whole nation would feel. The bottom line is the players got it wrong when they chose money over the national pride. They allowed Nyantakyi and co who do not have the nation at heart to use them. They should have remebered that they came into the limelight through our taxes and should have considered the general feelings of the Ghanaian population and finished the job in Brazil before embarking on such unpatriotic act. I am truely disappointed in these players and people like you who still support them may be because of the little sponsorship you are getting from these players.

Coconuthead, your name is the right description for you. Full of rubbish and nonsense. If he claims he was verbally abuse then he needed to divulge of what he actually said so it can be collaborated by the other players who were there. . Ghana cannot continue with Akwesi Appiah. Not even the citizens of Ghana respect his management skills. Look through this forum and most commentators here have no regard for him. They all think he is a dumb Ashanti, knowing that Ashantis are not intellectually capable of processing complex issues have confirmed all the stereotypes about them by this Kejetia boy.

I sympathise for Sulley because he was the most dedicated player on the field, so much committed. What can you say about how the GFA Official behaved. People who don't know how to handle crises should never get near our players. For me I blame Parker for the way he conducted himself. It is a shame to Ghana football administration. In a crises like this a few people should have been allowed to handle - the Minister, GFA Chairman and a few others.

You stupid Banger, you just heard half of the story and typically Ghanaian way without thinking, just jumped into conclusions. If you have any common sense in you, then you will reserve judgement on KPB before spilling your uneducated nonsense out. You have a guy who is a typical Ashanti or a Brong Ahafo guy, who we all know as Ghanaians are people who are capable of making up unsubstantiated accusations and allegations against people to garner sympathies and you fall for that crap? He knew the job was over his head, he took it because of the money involved and failed miserably at it, now he is using lies and innuendos to garner sympathies for his lack of skills to avoid the boot. Ghanaians should demand his resignation. He is a disgrace to be the face of Ghana soccer. Can't even articulate any issues to be understood. Bad image for Ghana.

Why should'nt KP question AA about why he left him on the bench when it was evidenced that the coach himself knew not what he was doing By saying "I wanted to bring on the big guys when the USA were tired".This shows AA is technically bankrupt tactiically absent minded .tweeeaaaaa coach

Bottom line Actions Ministers should be moved Coach Sacked, GFA dissolved Kelvin and Sulley cautioned. Terms of caution should be more harsh. No matter what right they did they also put theirselves on the line. Good intensions but the mode they chose was wrong. The shld hav believed in the media to carry their reservations Gyan captainship should be taken. President should do well next time not to airlift such huge sum. They should be prompt to their obligations not like that anyway. Ghanaians all is not lost, you have the future to think about. It is bright with the youngsters Do we need a black coach. I said it that at least we needed a white assistant moment I heard our group. Colour doesn't matter go for the best. I think we should grow up now we need a world class coach. Face it , if we do well we can pay them without tax money. Win competitions and the money will come. To those that punt in football, that's those that bet, remember a team in trouble never wins a match. Ghana gave me loads of cash in their last match the same idea I took all I won on colombia cos there was trouble too in Uurguay. I won 2k again. Cashing in today. Follow me

u re saying stupid stuffs. The coach said he was being insulted and cant even say a word that Kelvin used on him. He should tell Ghanaians the real truth and what actually happened between him and kelvin. AA is saying the players are aware but no player has even spoken about it either backing AA or Kelvin. This should tell u that he is hiding something...............

YES I DO BELIEVE THAT AA told KPB to **** off!! Why do I say so? 1st of all **** off is typical Ghanaian English and KPB wouldn't even know this if he had not heard it from the camp and to be precise, from Akwasi Appiah. In Germany, all they know is **** you and not **** off!! 2: german trained kids are direct and hardly lie, unlike Ghanaians who are forced to lie right from childhood...Who will then be lying here with this logic? 3: Grown ups in Ghana always want to be respected but will do very little to command respect. Do you people think Akwasi Appiah, so local he is, can command respect? He might even be deep into the corruption himself and no player dare not say anything, else you become disrespectful being...and believe me...a German trained boy will tell you that plain in the face. In short I do believe KPB more than Akwasi Appiah!! Did you read what Essien wrote to someone on instagram or twitter yesterday? Your GFA and the coach are corrupt. Thats all. Either you take it and make the necessary correction or you sink deep into your foolish pride and let GH football die.

Oh yeah and please don't bring this soft spoken church going shit here!! All these fools running GH are Alhajis, Pastors, Reverends, Imams etc... and they are the most corrupt people in GH. So his church going doesn't make him a better person. Its rather your deeds that makes you so!! Call a spade a spade is what Ghanaians are always afraid of. This country is full of evil thinking people pretending to be holy!!

Our hearts are broken but there is still room for improvement. Whether we like it or not AA will still be in charge for black stars and it has been confirmed period. we can only pray for him. I think Ghanaians like quick results and we pay dearly for it all the time. The state of our nation as i talk is as a result of these decissions. We are judging AA unfairly because he has done a good job since he took over as a coach and mind u, this is the first time Ghana has been able to secure draw with Germany in such an occasion so we shouldnt use his few set backs to ruin his career. The only poor performance was with Portugal when the so called appearance fee issue came to bare. I dont know why KP was sent to the world cup because how many qualifying matches did he play? even with u.s.a match he came in at the 58th minutes or so and what did he do............he was given a chance with Germany and he did nothing. If not indiscipline why would AA not like him. He is just doing business with us and nothing like patriotism. his heart is with Germany and nothing else. If people can remember, after the German`s national anthem we saw him clapping forgetting himself and no player in this tournament has clap for the opponent after their national anthem has been played. Michael Oti Adjei of tv3 complained so much about the inclussion of this player and we did not listen. With Sule its quiet unfortunate he went that far. Stardom come with discipline.....its not only about playing the football and being a good player but off the pitch also counts. But one thing also leads to the other so i think the management also have a lot to answer because as Sule said, they were too many and i think this monetary issue was brought on board by them and not the players. They use these players to make money and that is why they are loosing the respect due them. AA needs to sit up, must have learnt from these incidents and must be firm if not he cannot win anything for Ghana. God bless GH!!

You should examine your facts. KP only decided to switch to Ghana after it was made clear to him that he will not be selected for the German national team for the 2010 WC. He was good enough to make the German squad, but they didn't want to deal with his disciplinary issues. Somehow, he was welcomed to Ghana as some sort of hero.

Its time Ghanaian stop using the word gentleman or that. All those leaders in Ghana and Africa per say whom we turned to called gentlemen have failed as leaders. In Ghana any outspoken person is deemed as disrespectful. In Ghana we raised our children to lie and Europe children are raised to question on issues and to be out-spoken. KPB is not a destabilization person. His fault is having the courage to question the coach on his tactics and strategy. In a situation where a leader have no clear cut strategy or cannot communicate his intentions to his team would always leads to disaster. and confusion. This is exactly what happens in Black Stars camp. How many friendly games did AA won outside Africa? Apart from the one with Korea we won nothing. Even in all the games we conceded a goal in the first 20min. Any good coach would have found a solution to it and AA did nothing. This tells the kind of coach we entrusted the national team in the hands. AA to me is not good to be a Black Star coach. I said it many times prior to the world cup.AA must go
