Famous Black Stars and Hearts supporter 'Bayawa' dies

Ghana football is mourning the death of popular Black Stars fan Adjei Abbas Oparaku, nicknamed 'Bayawa' or 'Adjei Tia' at the age of 44. 

He died on Wednesday 21 December at the Police Hospital in Accra after a short illness.

The Black Stars supporter, who was also staunch Hearts of Oak fan, was buried on Thursday at the Madina cemetery according to Islamic customs with over 3000 people in attendance.

People from all walks of life including Ghana FA officials, Hearts of Oak management members as well as football lovers in the country turned up for his funeral.

Bayawa was one of the key members of the Ghana National Supporters Union (GHANSU).

He has followed the Black Stars to tournaments including the two World Cup finals in 2006 and 2010

Bayawa has also been at several Africa Cup of Nations finals and travelled for several international matches involving the national team.

His last match for the Black Stars was the friendly against Nigeria in London.

Bayawa was the sole dispatch rider for Hearts of Oak on their way to 2000 Africa Champions League title and he known to all of the Black Stars players.

He left behind three children following his wife's passing about six years ago.
