First AFC Cup Club Licensing Annual Workshop held

Published on: 20 January 2017

Kuala Lumpur: The first AFC Cup Club Licensing Annual Workshop concluded in Kuala Lumpur on Friday, bringing together a total of 21 club licensing managers from across Asia.

The club licensing system was first introduced in 2010 as a tool to benchmark clubs participating in the continent’s flagship competition, the AFC Champions League, and now it has been extended to the AFC Cup, which is in line with the AFC Vision and Mission to assist Member Associations (MAs) maximise their potential.

The workshop, organised by the AFC Member Association Development Department, was aimed to ensure the implementation of the AFC Cup Club Licensing Regulations by 2018 in the respective countries by introducing the Club Licensing Administration System (CLAS).

CLAS is an innovative online platform allowing clubs to comply with the AFC club licensing criteria and the MAs are benefitted by the transparency and administrative control of national club licensing.

AFC General Secretary Dato’ Windsor John said in his opening speech: “The new AFC Cup club licensing system is tailor made to be more inclusive in our approach to development.

“It represents a progressive step for aspiring and developing MAs to achieve greater professionalism in leagues and clubs in Asia.”

There was also a practical session which provided step-by-step CLAS implementation guidance for MAs’ club licensing managers, administrators and other users, as well as in-depth information on the criteria and requirements to set professional standards.

Sebastian Neuf from FIFA’s Professional Football Department gave an update on the latest FIFA activities and the various assistances provided, such as in drafting regulations, establishing framework and organising national seminars.

“We will continue our research and analysis to provide tools, manuals, services, experts and experiences to push the development of club licensing,” said Neuf.

FIFA Consultant Alex Davani were among the attendees at the workshop.
