In-form striker Majeed Waris insists Ghana are not underdogs in Group G at World Cup

Ghana striker Abdul Majeed Waris says the Black Stars are huge favourites to progress from the tough Group G at the FIFA 2014 World Cup finals Brazil.

Pundits believe the 2010 World Cup quarter-finalists have slim chances of advancing to the first knockout round after drawing European powerhouses Germany and Portugal.

Ghana’s opener is against the USA- a country the Black Stars have never lost to at any stage of FIFA tournaments- on 16 June.

Waris, who is set to play in his first World Cup finals, believes his teammates have the credentials to advance.

“Yes, people talk about this a lot,” Waris told FourFourTwo in an interview.

“We have a good chance. When we come up against all of these teams, that’s when everyone steps up their game similar to when we played Egypt [and won 6-1 in their play-off first leg back in October].''

Waris is one of the in-form Ghana players abroad after netting six goals in ten Ligue 1 matches since joining Valenciennes on loan in January.

Frankly speaking if akwesi appiah doesnt plays his cards right we cant even beat usa. Most of u guys might think i have something against coach appiah . To be honest i dont have anything against his personality since he seems to be a good gentleman. I rather have a problem with his coaching abilities. Since he took charge ghana hasnt won against any stiffer opposition apart from egypt. Everytime we play a non african country he struggles alot because there is no tactical plan in his game. I will be the first to salute Akwesi Appiah if his tactics are right. I will be very happy if AA proves most of us wrong. Let us hope things get better

@ Keith spot on! Akwasi Appiah got no game plan and lack ideas when the going gets tough.I have been saying that, the problem we've in the stars currently is the left and right full back but dude is doing nothing to rectify this situation and keep on calling average players on that position. Wakaso started as left full back, Essien did well with Madrid last season playing as right full back, Jerry Akaminko has been playing as right full back for eskisehirspor which is among the best defense in the super liga with 25 goals conceded whilst k.Asamoah can play as left full back as well. With kevin Boateng, muntari, Atsu, rabiu, Badu, Dede, Jordan and Adomah why can't Akwasi Appiah use the versatility of Essien, wakaso, Akaminko and k.Asamoah to the the main problem in the team? Mourinho once played muntari as centre back for inter, mourinho did the same with essien. I keep on saying Inkoom, Afful and opare will be disaster if Akwasi Appiah decide to play them against Portugal ,Germany and even the u.S.A. These 3 are below average I.e 3-4/10.AA please use the plan B to solve the above mentioned problem aaaaba!

@real sabacious u got it all right bro with the left and right full backs. Since we have a lot of midfielders AA must try essien or even wakaso at left back becsuse as u mentioned there are many options for the midfield.

If akwasi want be famouse as dr Kwame nkrumah for the whole world to recognise him then he should used the following squad 1-Adams kwarasay, 2-micheal essien, 3-kwadjo asamoah , 4-John boye 5-jerry akaminko 6- sensible afriyie aquah 7-Kelvin prince boateng 8-sulley muntari, 9-abdul majeed warris, 10.asamoah gyan,11- dede ayew. With 4-3-3 information afriyie acquah, sulley muntari, prince boateng in the midfield and warris ,Asamoah gyan, dede ayew upfront with kwadjo asamoah and micheal essien doing overlapping on both flanks Ooh my god I don't Think no team in this world can withstands The heat of this squad

what coaching abilities??? the man has none. if there was ever a case to be made on not needing a world class coach to win games, AA would be it. people should spare us the bullish arguments of "well players alone cannot win games, they need a coach." AA can coach barca and win games, but we all know it will not be because of his tactics. likewise jose mourihno can coach Benin and lose. i also find the idea that coaches motivate players also bull. only lazy players need to be motivated through threats of being benched. i see the skills of the players you have to be a much more determine factor than the coach you have......
