Former Liverpool goalkeeper Diego Cavalieri set for Palace - sources

As the fight to avoid relegation wages on, Paul Mariner and Ross Dyer take a look at the bottom half of the Premier League after week 27.

Crystal Palace are poised to sign former Liverpool goalkeeper Diego Cavalieri on a free transfer, sources close to the club have told ESPN FC.

Palace boss Roy Hodgson is looking to add to his goalkeeping options after losing Julian Speroni for a couple of months because of a knee injury.

Hodgson is looking to add cover for No. 1 keeper Wayne Hennessey as he does not want to leave his side short for the last 11 games of the season and he has been scouring the free agent market for a suitable player.

Former Brazil international Cavalieri is a free agent after cancelling his contract with Fluminense at the end of last year.

The 35-year-old has spent the last week training with Palace to prove his fitness and it appears the Brazilian has done enough to convince Hodgson that he warrants a short-term deal at Selhurst Park.

Hodgson worked briefly with Cavalieri at Liverpool in 2010 and he feels the experienced goalkeeper will be a valuable addition to the squad as they look to secure Premier League safety sitting just one point above the relegation zone.
