Memphis Depay celebrates the goal he scored in France

Memphis Depay, the former Manchester United star of Ghanaian descent, scored an incredible goal from the halfway line in the French top-flight over the weekend and the video of the Ligue 1 strike has gone viral.

The 23-year-old striker – who played for Manchester United during the 2015/16 season – played a blinder during the French league match at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais on Sunday (March 12).

After bagging a stunning 53rd minute goal to put Les Gones (The Kids) 3-0 ahead, the Dutch international, whose father is from Ghana, was thirsty for more.

And the goal he followed up with was absolutely incredible.

In amazing video – available above – a teammate nicks the ball from a Toulouse midfielder and passes it to Depay on the 81st minute.

Depay then turns with the ball and looks around to see who is free for a through ball.

But when he notices Toulouse goalkeeper Alban Lafont off his line, he decides to have a punt.

Not even looking up to see where he's hitting it, Depay smacks the ball towards goal.

It elegantly soars through the air as Lafont desperately runs back to save it but it's too late.

The ball dips down into the net and the stadium erupts into wild applause.

After the match, Depay said: "I didn't even see the ball go in. I just heard everyone go crazy.

"I tried one like that a few years ago and it hit the bar.

"I saw the goalkeeper was playing off his line in the first half and I kept that in the back of my mind."

The clip has been viewed thousands of times online and fans were amazed by the young Dutchman's talent with one calling him "future Ronaldo" and another dubbing him "the Dutch Neymar".

Manchester United bought Depay for £25m back in 2015 but did not play one full game for the club.

He signed to Lyon on a four and a half year contract in the January transfer window this year.

Lyon won the game 4-0 and currently sit in fourth place 18 points behind Ligue 1 leaders Monaco.

Toulouse are mid-table with 36 points.
