Fosu-Mensah reflects on Netherlands bow after Ghana snub

Crystal Palace defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah is keen on winning a regular position in the Dutch senior national team after making his debut for the side in August.

Mensah, who joined the Eagles from Manchester United in the off season, has been a long target for Ghana but the 19-year-old rejected the advances of the four-time Africa champions to turn up fof the Netherlands in a 4-0 loss to France last month.

The game effectively crashed Ghana's hopes of convincing the versatile guardsman for a switch of international allegiance.

“It was tremendous to get the opportunity to make my debut last month for the Netherlands and I am just looking to build my international career on from there and hopefully be a regular in the team," Fosu-Mensah told his club's official website.

"There is a lot of competition for places but we all know that is what it is like in this game and I am ready for the challenge.

"It's a special day, but unfortunately not with the desired result, I think the French were just a cut above us.

"I am very grateful to the coach for the confidence he has shown in me. I heard on the matchday that I would play.

"I was very happy and will always be grateful to Dick Advocaat for this opportunity."

Fosu-Mensah, alongside Spanish U-21 star Inaki Williams, was a top target for the Ghana Football Association.

In April, the player's management confirmed being contacted by the football governing body over a possible nationality switch.

He had at the time made appearances for the Dutch youth sides but remained eligible for Ghana due to a lack of competitive senior for the Netherlands.
