Four goals by record-breaker Kerr seals magical win

New Jersey: Sam Kerr has taken her spectacular run of form to an unprecedented new level, scoring four second-half goals to help Sky Blue FC engineer a remarkable 5-4 win over Seattle Reign FC in the US-based National Women’s Soccer League.

Just 48 hours after being shortlisted for The Best FIFA Women’s Player award, Kerr’s haul saw her leapfrog US star Megan Rapinoe as the NWSL’s leading scorer, and become the first player in league history to score four goals in a single match.

With Sky Blue FC trailing 3-0, Kerr began her scoring spree in the 48th minute before adding superb solo goals in the 68th and 71st minutes to bring the two sides level.

After the teams traded late goals, the Australian star looked to have spurned an opportunity to win the match when she hammered a 91st minute penalty against the woodwork, but she steered home a looping header in the fourth and final minute of stoppage time to complete a stunning individual performance.

The goals take Kerr’s tally to 15 in 17 NSWL matches this campaign, in addition to four in three matches in Australia’s Tournament of Nations triumph earlier this month.

Kerr, still only 23 years of age, will attempt to win the AFC Women’s Asian Cup for the second time when the Matildas face the continent’s finest women’s national teams in Jordan next April.
