Sellas Tetteh has come under pressure for World Cup failure

Ghana winger Frank Acheampong insists under-fire Sellas Tetteh must be made to stay on as coach of the Ghana U20 team despite their failed bid at the World Cup.

Tetteh’s side failed to reach their target of at least making the semi finals of the tournament staged in New Zealand which was eventually won by Serbia.

The Black Satellites crashed out at the Round of 16 stage to eventual bronze medal winners Mali.

Ghana had enjoyed an impressive group campaign which included a famous win over record winners Argentina.

But the Black Satellites, full of hope and promise were torn into shreds by Mali in the first knockout stage to see Ghana crash out of the tournament after suffering a 3-0 thumping.

Pressure has since mounted on Tetteh to either resign or be sacked.

The former Rwanda coach is rumoured to be extremely stubborn with his mode of selection and game plans into matches – preferring not to give in to suggestions from members of the team’s management committee especially chairman Wilfred Osei.

This has further fueled to the calls to have the experienced trainer who led the same side to World Cup success in 2009.

But Frank Acheampong who played under Sellas Tetteh at the 2013 FIFA U20 World Cup where Ghana finished third is convinced Tetteh remains the right man for the job.

"It is normal in this country that you get criticized when things don't go well," the Anderlecht star told Metro TV.

"But I don't think he [Sellas Tetteh] should be kicked [out].

"He has been there for a long time and knows the category well.

"We just have to come back and prepare well for the next tournament."

Ghana went into the World Cup having clinched bronze at the 2015 African Youth Championships where they first lost to the same Mali in the group stage but beat them to finish third in Senegal.
