Ghana midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong has been handed a one-match ban for his sending off on his Barnsley debut.

The 22-year-old attracted two yellow cards in quick succession in the Reds’ 1-0 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday last Saturday.

Frimpong got sent off within the first 30 minutes of his debut for Barnsley having arrived from Arsenal before the winter transfer window closed.

The situation with Frimpong’s sending off is further aggravated as Jacob Mellis was also shown a straight red card in the defeat to Sheffield.

Barnsley manager Danny Wilson hopes the effects of the key suspensions will not affect his side’s fortunes this weekend against Ipswich Town.

“We can’t be having players getting sent off, but it’s happened now and we have to move,” Barnsley manager Danny Wilson said.

“Of course I’m disappointed both players got sent off, but I don’t think we were helped by refereeing decisions.

“Ultimately though we have to look at ourselves and realised we should have seen it through [right until the final whistle].

“We defended brilliantly and gave everything. If the players show that type of attitude for the rest of the season then it’s going to count for a lot.

“We’re not going to have Jacob or Emmanuel for Saturday, but that gives an opportunity to other players to come in and be given the chance to do well.”
