German side Augsburg have signed Ghana defender Daniel Opare to replace Chelsea-bound Black Stars left-back Baba Abdul Rahman, GHANAsoccernet.com can confirm.

The Bundesliga outfit have landed the former Real Madrid Castilla defender on a 3-year-old contract following his exit from Portuguese giants FC Porto.

Opare, 24, terminated his contract on mutual consent with Porto after the Stadio Dragao side relegated him to their second rank side after failing to reach a deal with Turkish side Besiktas for a permanent sale of the defender.

Augsburg, who have pocketed close to £18 million from the sale of Baba Rahman following his impending sale to English champions Chelsea.

The Fuggerstädter manager Markus Weinzierl has already acquired defender Max Philipp from Karlsruher SC but the German gaffer wants competition for the left-back role and has brought the 2009 U20 FIFA World Cup gold medalist on board.

Opare's versatility will allow him play on either side of the lateral defence. Baba was voted second best young player in the German top-flight last season and Markus is working around the clock to bring in enough quality to fill the void created by Baba's absence.

He spent last season on loan at Turkish side Besiktas after failing to break into the Porto first team squad.
