Jerome scored a brilliant header to opened the scoring for the world champions before Mario Gomez and Julian Draxler one each to make it 3-0.

And Schweinsteiger was delighted to see the 27-year-old get on the score sheet at last, saying: "I'm pleased. It took him long enough."

"It's always important that you have players in the centre working well," Schweinsteiger agreed.

"That's the case now, which is good. But it's not only these three," Schweinsteiger said.

Germany will now meet Spain or Italy in the quarter-finals, and Schweinsteiger is welcoming the prospect of facing another of the tournament favourites.
