Ghana aims to claim CAF Women Championship
Coach Yusif Basigi

Ghana’s Black Queens has set eyes on another World Cup qualification and they plan to achieve it by winning the 2014 TN Mobile CAF Women Championship which starts in Namibia on 11 October.

Ghana coach Yussif Basigi said during his team’s training session  at the Namibia Football Association (NFA)Technical Centre, that they were getting down to final preparations ahead of their Group B campaign and plan to go all the way in Namibia.

“We got here Sunday and so far the preparations are going well. The weather is not bad and we are just going about our business," he told Namibia Football Association website.

"We know we have strong opposition in Group B and it won’t be easy for us just to go all the way but we are confident of making it through.

"Our plan is to first qualify for the world cup by playing in the final here and secondly win the championship."

The coach further reveals that his current crop of 21 players has been together for over four years at various national team levels and the understanding of the philosophy is very clear.

“We just brought in some players that played at the Under-20 world cup and yes they blend in well because we have a great tradition of doing that and now it is time to deliver and do it well. All the teams here are the best in Africa at the moment and we respect them but we set our goals and need to work hard to achieve them” Basigi explains.

The Black Queens coach also calls on the locals to support the championships and especially their local team, the Brave Gladiators.

“Local support is always great and for Namibia they need to have that. We played here before and so we kind of used to the conditions here and we will appreciate all the support and people coming to the Stadiums to support the championship.

"It is the first time Namibia is playing in this tournament and local support will be crucial for them to do well as well”, urges Basigi.

Ghana will play Namibia in a pre-tournament friendly match on 07 October and will play their first game of the ninth edition of the championship on Sunday, 12 October at the Independence Stadium in Windhoek at 20h00 against Algeria.

Host Namibia, Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire and Zambia are in Group A whilst Algeria, Ghana, South Africa and Cameroon make up Group B.

The three top finishers at the TN Mobile 2014 African Women Championship will represent the continent at the 2015 FIFA Women World Cup in Canada.
