Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan has revealed a failed attempt to join English giants Manchester City in 2008.

The 30-year-old has since reunited with the manager who wanted to sign him at Chinese big-spenders Shanghai SIPG.

Gyan claims Sven-Goran Eriksson initiated moves to sign him to Manchester City in 2008 but an injury sustained while on international duty with the Black Stars during that yea’s AFCON which was staged on home soil collapsed the move.

"Our relationship has been very very good. I knew Eriksson way back in 2008 when he was at Man City, he nearly signed me for Man City but I had an injury at CAN 2008,” Gyan revealed to the media on Tuesday.

“That was where I got that injury so the deal didn't happen."

Gyan, then playing for French club Stade Rennes, eventually played in the Premier League for just one season for Sunderland before jetting off to the UAE to play for Al Ain.

His time in the gulf was a huge success – winning the domestic league title with the Boss on three occasion over a four-year period during which he also clinched the top scorer’s award on three occasions.
