Captain Asamoah Gyan admits a win in the World Cup opening group game against USA is key to Ghana’s success in Brazil.
The Black Stars will be facing the Yanks for the third time at the World Cup finals in the opening Group G game on June 16 in Natal.
Ghana has prevailed in all two previous meetings of the side but is expected to have a tougher opposition this time around.
With anticipated difficult games against Germany and Portugal in the subsequent group matches to come, the Ghana striker accepts that an opening win over the USA is vital to his team’s progress in Brazil.
“A win in our first game is very crucial for us, getting the three points [against USA],” he told Asempa FM.
“It will boost our confidence going forward and that is what we are looking for.”
Gyan is best remembered for his explosive strike against the USA which sent Ghana through to the quarter finals of the last World Cup in South Africa.
The Al Ain ace however adds that his team’s immediate focus at the tournament is geared towards progressing from the group stages before setting further targets.
“In every competition, the objective first is to get out of the group stage before we set other targets.
“Therefore the focus is first to get out of the group and then look to do better. We always aspire to do better at any tournament.”
