Ghana captain Mensah allays AFCON injury fears

Captain John Mensah has assured Ghanaians of his fitness for next year's Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

A prolonged back injury has seen limited playing opportunities for the 29-year-old for his French club Olympique Lyon, sparking fears he might not be fully fit to help the Black Stars in its bid to end a 30-year wait for an African title.

Despite his poor medical record in recent times, Mensah was included in Ghana's provisional 25-man squad for a pre-tournament training tour in South Africa  under strong information according to Coach Goran Stevanovic he will be fine.

Mensah after making a surprise appearance at the Sammy Kuffour testimonial on Friday also insists he is good to go.

"I have been injured for sometime now but since December I have been cleared by doctors to play," he told GHANAsoccernet.com.

"I therefore want to tell Ghanaians not t worry about my injury because I am fit and will be able to make my contribution to the Black Stars at the Nations Cup."

Mensah will hopefully be the one to  lift the trophy for Ghana  as Black Stars captain at the biennial showpiece scheduled to kick off on January 21.
