Video: Ghana captain Mensah downplays red card effect at AFCON

Ghana captain John Mensah is confident the Black Stars will thrive in his absence as he is likely two miss two matches at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.

The France-based defender was sent off in the 66th minute for a late tackle on Botswana dangerman Jerome Ramatlhakwana during Tuesday's Group D game.

This means he is likely to miss the rest of the group matches against Mali and Guinea, subject to confirmation to CAF.

But Mensah says there are players capable of helping the Black Stars advance from the tough group.

"It is unfortunate that I received a red card and this had presented some problems to the team," Mensah told MTNFootball.com.

"As you can see even in my absence the guys who came in did very well to hold the Botswana side even though they had the numerical advantage.

"I am confident that we will win the rest of our matches to be able to qualify for the next stage comfortably."

Mensah scored his first ever Africa Cup of Nations goal which gave his side the 1-0 win victory.

He will now have to wait to find out if CAF will be lenient with him following his red card.

The Olympique Lyon centre-back has played in three previous finals- 2002, 2006 and 2008-and made 12 appearances.
